This slice makes a wonderful treat for special occasions, it is one of our family favourites for Christmas along with peanut butter balls and choc chip cookies.    It can be made a couple of days ahead and kept in the refrigerator, or alternatively keeps well in the freezer too.   This slice can easily be made  gluten free if you just use gluten free flour in place of ordinary flour, I find the Aldi brand of gluten free flour the best tasting and most economical.  All of these home made treats will cost a fraction of the price of…

This recipe came about as a way to use up some left over apple sauce which was in the fridge. The apple sauce was actually from our last year’s crop of apples, which I had stewed and frozen in small quantities. This cake is gluten free, but you can use regular flour if you like.  I like the Aldi brand of gluten free flour, it not only tastes great but is the most economical.  This cake makes a delicious tea cake or desert and is especially lovely served warm. Ingredients 125 g butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs ¾ cup…

All those little frugal tasks really do add up to great savings for your family.  The savings you make by being thoughtful on how you spend your time and money, can be used to enjoy a wonderful quality of life which would not be possible otherwise.  Probably the largest area of savings is that of grocery shopping.  The difference between, buying ingredients and cooking from scratch compared to buying processed foods for convenience sake can literally add up to thousands per year for a family.  That may mean the difference between being able to be a stay at home mum…

Do you ever get discouraged and wonder if your effort to be wise with your money is worth it? I would like to encourage you that it is, and that all those little bits of effort really do add up! Since financial stress is the number one cause for marriage breakdown, then being in control of your finances rather than being out of control, is a wonderful gift you can give to yourself and your family. Dave Ramsey has some wonderful suggestions for getting on the road to financial freedom. One of the most basic things you can do in…

Here’s a great recipe for another super easy Christmas treat.  The kids will love to help with this one!  It is quick and easy and all mixes up in the one bowl.  If you would like to make your rocky road gluten free just select gluten free chocolate, marshmallows and lollies.  I used turkish delight in place of jelly lollies.  Once set, you could chop your rocky road up into bite sized pieces and wrap it in cellophane for a lovely simple home-made gift.  Kids will love to be included in some special “cooking” around this time of year.  …

Here’s a lovely old fashioned desert which is very easy to do. You can use any fresh fruit like apples, peaches or even mixed berries. But if you are short on time, a can of fruit will do the trick too! I threw this together in less than ten minutes and it is just the thing for a cosy night in.  If you need to make this gluten free, I suggest using the Aldi  brand of gluten free flour, it is an excellent flour, as well as very economical. Ingredients 1 large can peaches (drained) or 2 cups of fruit of…

I recently harvested a crop of chillies from my chilli bushes which were left on there from last season. They are not a particularly hot chilli so I often put several of them in my chilli beef recipe to bulk it up. On this particular occasion I decided to try something different so I looked up some recipes for chilli jam or relish. Since I didn’t have all the correct ingredients for the recipes I looked up, I ended up making my own recipe and it turned out delicious. I’m sorry I do not know the variety of chilli that…

Over the last few weeks I have been blessed with several bags of oranges and lemons, given to me by people with an abundance of fruit on their home citrus trees. Today I had a lovely time making a few things with some of the citrus. If you have a citrus tree, or have been given some citrus, here’s a few ideas for using them. Of course, nothing beats just eating fresh oranges as they are, we have been eating oranges for weeks now. Lemon cordial is another great way to use lemons, and is absolutely delicious. You can find…
